Radford University was recognized among the best regional public universities in the U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Colleges” 2015 rankings on Sept. 9, 2014, from an evaluation of the school’s programs and offerings.
The U.S. News ranks schools by dividing Regional Universities and Colleges based on their geographic location, and then looks at each school mission and academic excellence.
RU is ranked 34th overall on the “Best Regional Universities – South” list, which includes both public and private universities in the south. Ranked at 13th place, RU was also named as one of the top 15 public universities in the south, by the U.S. News.
Particularly, RU was recognized because of the vast quantity of clubs, media outlets, Division I sports, and the ability for students to go bicycling, kayaking, or fishing in the nearby New River and Blue Ridge Mountains.
Kenley Rowe, freshman at Radford University, reacts, “I think it [the ranking] reinforces it [Radford University], because I’ve always known how great of a school academically it is, but it was downgraded a lot by its reputation. I love the fact that it’s finally getting some attention in the academic side.”
Regional Universities offer a wide range of undergraduate degrees and some opportunities for obtaining a master’s degree in various programs, but few doctoral programs. Regional Colleges focus on undergraduate education but grant less than 50 percent of their degrees in liberal arts masteries.
“I think that the types of food and variety of food they offer should be increased. That I believe would help increase the rankings,” said Haley Johnson, sophomore at Radford University, who believes this is what the university should focus on improving if they want to get a higher placing for future publications.
Radford University has also been recognized and ranked in several previous publications during the last several years.
Radford University was shown on the “Best Regional Universities – South” list in 2013-14, on a list of “Top Online Education Programs” for the Doctor of Nursing Practice program in 2012, and on a list of “Top Public Master’s Universities in the South” from 2010-12.
