Radford University’s men and women’s basketball prepare for the upcoming season with a double header on Nov. 20 in the Dedmon Center to get the community excited and start the season with a bang.
Last year, RU won its first NCAA postseason game in school history, defeating Oregon State on the road in the opening round of the College Basketball Invitational, according to Radford News & Events.
For the first time in several years, both the women and men’s basketball teams of Radford University will have their first games on the same day. RU women’s basketball start their game at 5 p.m. and the RU men’s basketball begins at 7:30 p.m.
New athletes will also make their debut at the home opener, such as freshman Brittany Allen, who is excited about winning some basketball games with her teammates. “We are young and learning some new things but we are striving for a winning season,” said Allen.
Both teams will be supported by a brand new student organization, the Radford Rowdies, founded by junior Mahdi Torabinejad.
“We’ll be leading chants, leading the atmosphere, getting under the skin of the opposing team’s players, creating an identity of a Radford sports fan in general, something to join and get behind together,” said Torabinejad.
There will be tons of opportunities for Radford students and the community to show off their spirit this upcoming season. “Banners, flags, organized choreographies are all in the works, we’re just now getting started with all that,” said Torabinejad. “Everyone is really excited about the team this year, we’re expecting big things for sure. It’s a great group with some big time players. I believe we can go far in the Big South Tournament for sure.”
Rival games will definitely spark a big audience for both Radford basketball teams. “Our [Radford women’s basketball’s] first big south game will be Dec. 6 against Liberty at home! Everyone should definitely check it out,” said Allen. Radford women’s basketball lost to Liberty last season, and is preparing to come back with a victory this season.
The RU men’s team’s biggest rival game will be against Virginia Tech on Dec. 7 at 3 p.m. at Tech’s Cassel Coliseum.
Radford men and women’s basketball teams are hoping for a thrilling and successful season.
